Managing a Complex Nationwide Rollout
Signs Express Bristol & Gloucester has delivered a nationwide rebranding programme for Mears Group, managing the project from initial consultation and site surveys through to production and installation.
The brief involved much more than reproducing the same graphics across several locations. Each building had its own layout, surfaces and access requirements, so the team needed to apply the refreshed Mears Group identity in a way that felt consistent without forcing the same solution into every space.
The rollout included large-format wall graphics, reception branding, interior and exterior window graphics, privacy graphics and wayfinding, all installed within live working environments.
Planning each location carefully
Detailed site surveys formed the starting point for the project.
Before production began, Signs Express Bristol & Gloucester assessed wall sizes, window dimensions, surfaces, access requirements and installation conditions at each location. This gave the team the information needed to adapt artwork and specifications before anything reached site.
It also helped identify practical issues early.
Rather than treating every building in the same way, the team could respond to the space in front of them. Different layouts required different approaches, but the overall visual identity still needed to feel familiar wherever it appeared.
The survey information fed directly into production and installation, helping to reduce uncertainty later in the process and ensuring the graphics were prepared for the environments in which they would be fitted.
Working around live office environments
Installation brought another consideration: Mears Group's offices remained operational throughout the programme.
Employees still needed access to their workplaces while wall graphics, window applications and other branding elements were being installed. Signs Express Bristol & Gloucester therefore coordinated the surveying, production and fitting stages around the requirements of each location.
Good preparation made a noticeable difference on site.
Measurements, material specifications and access requirements had already been considered before installers arrived, allowing the fitting teams to concentrate on the installation itself rather than resolving avoidable issues during the working day.
This helped keep disruption to a minimum while maintaining the standard required across the rollout.
Matching the material to the application
Material choice was an important part of the project.
For interior wall graphics and branding elements, Signs Express Bristol & Gloucester selected Drytac ReTac® Smooth 150, a 150µ white polymeric PVC film featuring Drytac's permanently peelable ReTac adhesive technology.
The repositionable adhesive was particularly useful for large-format wall installations. It allowed installers to adjust graphics during fitting, helping with accurate positioning without compromising the long-term finish.
Glass required a different approach.
For interior and exterior window graphics, the team chose Drytac Polar® Grip, an 80µ white polymeric PVC film with a high coat weight permanent grey adhesive. The product is designed to provide strong adhesion on more challenging surfaces while maintaining print quality and durability.
Using different media for walls and glass meant the team could select the product according to the demands of each surface rather than relying on one specification throughout.
Across the UK and Ireland, Drytac products are distributed exclusively by Premier.
All graphics were produced using HP Latex printing technology, providing vibrant colour reproduction and sharp detail across the various applications. Its water-based inks were also well suited to the occupied office environments in which the graphics were installed.
For a rollout covering numerous sites, the combination of suitable media and controlled print production helped the team maintain the intended appearance of the refreshed branding from one location to another.
Why the materials mattered
Ben Walker, Director of Signs Express Bristol & Gloucester, explained the thinking behind the specification:
“The project required materials that could deliver consistent performance across a wide range of applications while maintaining the same premium appearance from one site to the next.
ReTac Smooth 150 gave our installers the flexibility to accurately position large graphics thanks to its permanently peelable adhesive, which was particularly valuable on large wall installations.
Polar Grip also performed exceptionally well on glass, providing excellent adhesion and a premium finish. Combined with HP Latex printing, the materials delivered vibrant colours, sharp detail and consistently high-quality results across every location.”
Behind the finished graphics was a carefully managed process
Signs Express Bristol & Gloucester combined detailed surveying, considered material selection, controlled production and coordinated installation to deliver the project across multiple sites while working around everyday business activity.
The relationship has continued beyond the initial rollout. Signs Express Bristol & Gloucester is now supporting Mears Group as the programme expands to further locations.
For businesses managing more than one site, the project shows the value of having a signage partner that can look after the detail from the first survey through to installation, while adapting the solution to suit each individual environment.
Whether refreshing one workplace or introducing a new identity across a wider estate, Signs Express Bristol & Gloucester can advise on wall graphics, window graphics, reception branding, privacy graphics, wayfinding and wider rebranding requirements.
