Making the Emmaus Brand Work in Real Places
Emmaus does vital work in the communities it serves, supporting people who have experienced homelessness through accommodation, meaningful work, training and ongoing support.
For its locations in Bristol, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud and Nailsworth, the signage needed to do more than carry a logo. It had to help people spot Emmaus easily, feel confident about where they were going, and recognise the charity’s presence across different towns and sites.
The brief was clear, but the job itself was not a simple repeat order. Each location had its own building layout, shopfront size, access points and existing signage to consider. Some sites had plenty of fascia space. Others needed a more compact approach. The vehicles were different sizes, too, which meant the graphics had to be handled properly rather than simply scaled up or down.
Signs Express Bristol was asked to support the rebrand from start to finish, including site surveys, advice, production and installation.

A Rollout That Needed Careful Planning
Emmaus wanted its updated branding to feel recognisable wherever people came across it, while still making sense for each site.
The project included shopfront signage, fascia signs, exterior signs, pod signs and vehicle graphics. Every item needed to feel part of the same brand family, but each location still needed its own checks before the team could recommend the best way forward.
Cost was also an important part of the brief. Emmaus needed a high-quality finish, competitive pricing and a partner who could manage the detail without creating unnecessary delays or complications.
That meant the survey stage mattered. Signs Express Bristol travelled to each location to measure up, check access, review the available space and understand what would be needed before anything went into production.
Five Locations, Five Different Sets of Details
A multi-site rebrand needs consistency, but it also needs flexibility. For Emmaus, that meant looking carefully at each location before deciding how the signage should be produced and installed.
The rollout covered Bristol, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud and Nailsworth. Across those sites, there were different layouts, sign sizes and access requirements to consider, so a single standard approach would not have worked.
Some locations needed larger shopfront signage, while others called for a more tailored layout to suit the available space. Store managers also wanted designs that worked for their individual sites, without moving away from the wider Emmaus brand.
The vehicle graphics needed the same level of care. With different vehicle sizes across the fleet, each layout had to be adapted to suit the available space, keeping the branding clear and consistent wherever the vehicles were seen.
From Brand Guidelines to Practical Signage
Signs Express Bristol managed the work from survey through to installation.
After visiting the sites, the team used the survey details to prepare accurate specifications and pricing. That early work helped keep the project cost-effective and gave Emmaus a clearer view of what would be needed at each location.
The Emmaus black, white and green colour palette gave the signage a strong visual impact. From there, the designs were adapted to suit the different spaces, from larger fascia signs to smaller exterior signs, pod signs and vehicle panels.
The project included:
Shopfront and fascia signage across multiple Emmaus locations
Exterior signage and pod signs to support visibility
Vehicle graphics adapted for different fleet sizes
Bespoke layout adjustments for different buildings, sign sizes and access requirements
Site surveys and installation across Bristol, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud and Nailsworth
The aim throughout was simple: keep the Emmaus brand clear, make each sign work properly in its setting, and deal with the practical details early so the rollout could keep moving.
Getting the Details Right Before Installation
Once the surveys were complete, the artwork was prepared and adapted for each site. This was not a case of taking one layout and forcing it to fit everywhere.
Some signs needed more breathing space. Others needed the design tightened up so the messaging stayed clear from the street. The same thinking applied to the vehicles, where each layout had to suit the size and shape of the individual vehicle.
Production was planned carefully, with installation arranged around site access and day-to-day operations. For Emmaus, that meant the work could be delivered without unnecessary disruption.
The project was completed within the agreed timescales, giving Emmaus a smooth rollout across its locations and a consistent new look across both premises and fleet graphics.
The Finished Result
The completed signage gives Emmaus a stronger presence across Bristol, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud and Nailsworth.
The shopfronts are easier to recognise from the street. The pod signs add visibility at key points across the sites. The vehicle graphics take the Emmaus name and message out into the wider community, creating brand visibility even when the vehicles are on the move.
For Emmaus, the value was not just in the final signs. It was in having one local team able to travel to each site, understand the differences, adapt the artwork, manage the production and deliver the project on time.
For Signs Express Bristol, it was a strong example of what good signage work often comes down to: asking the right questions, checking the details and finding the right solution for each space.
Supporting a Wider Rebrand
A key highlight for Signs Express Bristol was supporting an established organisation with a coordinated rebrand across several locations.
Projects like this need more than smart-looking signs. They need clear communication, practical planning and a team that understands how to balance brand consistency with real-world site conditions.
Every Emmaus location had something different to consider. By carrying out surveys, adapting the designs and managing the installation carefully, Signs Express Bristol helped deliver a rollout that felt consistent without ignoring the details that made each site different.
