Client Needs
Access Creative College approached Signs Express Bristol to help bring its new branding to life at its Norwich campus.
The college wanted to refresh the building's exterior and create a consistent visual identity that reflected its brand. With a prominent building and several different surfaces to cover, the new graphics needed to make an impact while working together as part of the overall design.
The installation also had to be completed within a tight timeframe. With significant pedestrian footfall and vehicle traffic directly outside the college, completing the work safely and with minimal disruption was an important part of the brief.
Project Overview
Signs Express Bristol was responsible for managing the project from production through to installation, bringing together several types of exterior signage and graphics.
The work included:
Installation across multiple elevations and surfaces
The installation took place over one week in early August. Given the busy surroundings, a significant amount of the work along the front of the building was scheduled outside normal working hours.
The Solution
The project involved more than simply producing and fitting graphics. The materials and finishes needed to suit the building while delivering the appearance the college and its designers wanted to achieve.
We worked closely with the design team to understand the requirements and advise on suitable materials, particularly for the extensive window treatment.
Before production began, our team supplied physical samples, including solar window films. This gave the designers and client an opportunity to assess the appearance, suitability and expected performance of the proposed materials before approving them for production.
With the finishes agreed, we moved ahead with producing the graphics and preparing for installation.
The finished scheme brought together wall wraps, solar window film, external vinyl graphics and high-level branded flags. Each element was installed as part of the wider rebrand, creating a consistent look across the building's exterior.
Project Management and Installation
We acted as the main point of coordination throughout, managing the different elements from production to final installation.
Our role included working with the designers, advising on materials and finishes, producing samples for approval and organising the installation programme.
With the designs agreed, the next consideration was how to carry out the installation around the college's busy frontage.
Large areas of graphics and solar film needed to be fitted along the front elevation, where pedestrians and vehicles regularly passed the building. Scheduling much of this work after hours helped provide safer working conditions and reduced disruption to the surrounding area.
The project also involved fitting graphics across different elevations and installing the wall-mounted flags at top-storey level.
Keeping the various elements coordinated was important, particularly with only one week available to complete the installation.
The work was finished within the planned programme, with the different graphics and signage elements brought together across the building.
Challenges Faced
The level of pedestrian and vehicle traffic directly outside the college was one of the biggest practical challenges.
Installing large-format graphics along the front elevation required the team to consider both safety and access, particularly when working across the windows and exterior walls.
Rather than carrying out all the work during normal hours, much of the front-facing installation was scheduled for quieter periods.
This gave our installers more suitable working conditions while helping to minimise disruption to the public and the college.
Choosing the Right Materials
Getting the finishes right was another important consideration.
The solar film covered the full front window expanse, so the client and designers needed to be confident in the chosen material before production.
Having physical samples available made those discussions more straightforward. It allowed the proposed finishes to be reviewed and approved in advance, reducing the likelihood of issues arising later.
Managing Different Installation Requirements
With wall wraps, window film, external vinyl graphics and high-level flags forming part of the project, the installation involved several different applications.
Each needed to be considered as part of the overall programme.
By coordinating the production and installation stages, Signs Express Bristol was able to address material and finish considerations before work began on site and manage the installation through to completion.
Materials and Technologies Used
The project involved a range of specialist signage materials and installation equipment:
Full wall wrap vinyl graphics: Applied across large exterior wall surfaces.
Solar window film: Installed across the full front window expanse.
External-grade vinyl graphics: Applied to additional exterior surfaces.
Wall-mounted branded flags: Fitted at top-storey level.
Specialist application tools and installation equipment: Used to install the different types of graphics.
High-level access equipment: Used to carry out installation work at height.
Project Highlights
A particular highlight for us was being able to contribute to the project beyond the installation itself.
Working with the designers and supplying physical material samples meant our team could offer guidance on how the proposed finishes would look and perform before production began.
The scale of the exterior rebrand was also something the team took pride in.
Large wall wraps, extensive solar window film, external graphics and top-storey flags all contributed to the finished appearance. Seeing the original designs applied across the building showed how the different signage elements worked together.
Completing the installation within one week was another positive outcome, particularly given the location and the amount of front-facing work that had to take place outside normal hours.
The Results
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The completed installation gave Access Creative College Norwich a refreshed exterior, with the new branding applied consistently across the building.
The wall wraps created a strong visual presence, while the solar window film, external vinyl graphics and high-level flags helped bring the overall design together.
The project was completed within the agreed one-week installation programme, despite the challenges presented by the busy location.
The college was particularly pleased with the team's communication, efficiency on site and advice on material finishes.
Signs Express Bristol's Perspective
For our team, this project was about getting the details right while keeping a demanding installation programme on track.
Being involved from production onwards meant we could work directly with the designers, share our knowledge of materials and help them decide on the finishes before anything went into full production. The solar film samples were particularly useful in those discussions.
The biggest practical consideration was the location. With pedestrians and vehicles passing directly outside the college, much of the front-facing installation had to be completed after hours. This needed careful coordination, especially with several different types of graphics to install.
Seeing the original designs come together across the building was a rewarding result. From the wall wraps and window treatment to the external vinyl graphics and high-level flags, the finished installation gave the campus a new look.
The feedback from the Head of Campus was particularly pleasing. The client appreciated the communication and advice as well as the work completed on site, which made the project all the more worthwhile for our team.
