The New Waterfoot Primary School
After more than a hundred years at their old site, Waterfoot Primary School finally made the move to a brand-new eco school at Wolfenden Green. The staff wanted the new place to feel bright, welcoming and in tune with their values around sustainability. They needed signs that helped people find their way around but also added warmth and personality to the new building.

The brief
Warden Construction, who built the school, asked Signs Express (Central Lancashire) to handle the signage. The brief was to create something simple, modern and in keeping with the building’s design. Everything needed to be installed before the start of term, so planning was key.
Our Approach
We spent time on-site early on, looking at how colour was used in each area so the signs could follow the same theme. Every piece was made from aluminium composite, a material that lasts and can be fully recycled later on.
To keep things environmentally friendly, we printed everything using latex inks. They’re odourless and safe for children, so ideal for a school setting. All the work, from design through to manufacturing, was done at our Preston centre, which meant we could control timing and quality right up to installation.
Challenges
The schedule was tight. With an official move-in date fixed, there was no room for delays. We kept in regular contact with the headteacher and Warden Construction to make sure each stage ran smoothly. Having everything made locally helped – if something needed adjusting, it could be sorted quickly.
The Result
When the school opened its doors, the signage gave the new building a finished feel. The bright colours tied in nicely with the interior design, and the clean lines kept it professional without losing that friendly look a primary school needs. It’s a project we’re really proud of – one that shows how good design can be both practical and sustainable.
