OUR WORK
The addition of the name of a WWI soldier on a metal memorial in Worcester
We were asked to add one more name to the metal memorial in Gheluvelt Park, which remembers soldiers from the Worcestershire Regiment who died at the Battle of Gheluvelt in 1914.

Project Overview
The main concern was keeping the new name in line with the existing look of the piece, nothing shiny or fresh, just something that blended in as if it had always been there. The memorial has been outdoors for years and has taken on a lovely, natural patina. That made things a bit tricky. A normal engraving or repaint would have looked wrong. The new lettering had to match the old metal in both colour and texture.
Solutions Provided
We cut a vinyl stencil to make sure the spacing and position were spot-on. Then we used a corrosive solution to gently wear into the surface, creating a finish that matched the rest of the sculpture. Once the lettering looked right, we gave it a light coat of anti-rust paint, just enough to protect it without losing the aged feel. Everything was done carefully on site by hand. The job needed patience and a steady touch to get the tone just right.
Outcome
The biggest challenge was the balance. Too much treatment and the new name would stand out, too little and you wouldn’t see it at all. We made small adjustments along the way until it felt natural. When it was finished, the new inscription sat perfectly in the metal. Most people wouldn’t even know it was added later, which is exactly what we wanted.
