The Project
Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), with more than 40,000 students across four campuses, wanted to breathe new life into part of its Cambridge site.
The area in question? A ground-floor space tucked under a three-storey atrium, right by the library. It should have been busy. Instead, it sat empty. A practical space, but dull. Forgettable.
The brief to Signs Express Glasgow was straightforward: make it somewhere students wanted to be - to chat, to study, or simply to take a break.

Our Work
We started with large-format graphics, printed and applied to the reverse of clear acrylic panels. Some were colourful illustrations, deliberately bold. Others carried a more personal touch, a black-and-white portrait of a final-year French student student, adding a human face to the space.
The whole scheme was tied together with bright yellow. Not an accident. Yellow worked with the daylight pouring in from the atrium above, making the corner feel warmer, more alive.
And to finish? Illuminated lightboxes. They projected light through the printed panels, so even in the evening, the walls glowed, adding depth and energy.

The Result
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The difference was immediate. What had been a forgotten corner quickly became a focal point. Students started using it between lectures, studying in groups, catching up with friends, or just taking a breather.
For us at Signs Express Glasgow, it showed how signage isn’t only about branding. It can change how people feel in a space. And in this case, it turned a blank wall into one of the most inviting places on campus.
